Our monthly foreclosure report follows. Dane County foreclosures decreased for the second straight month in July. July foreclosure filings decreased by 9% from the number of filings registered in July of 2009, according to data maintained by the Wisconsin Circuit Court. A total of 146 new foreclosures were filed in July compared to 161 a year ago. Wisconsin foreclosures were also down in July, decreasing by 20% from the number of filings registered a year ago. A total of 2,206 new foreclosures were filed in July compared to 2,757 in July of 2009. The graph below shows the number of monthly Dane County foreclosure filings dating back to January, 2005. The number of monthly year-over-year foreclosure filings has been mostly up (red) since the summer of 2005.
Year-to-Date Trend
The number of new Dane County foreclosure filings initiated year-to-date through the month of July increased by 7% from the levels of 2009. A total of 1,000 filings were initiated year-to-date through July compared to 932 during the same time period in 2009.
Statewide foreclosures decreased by 2% from the levels of 2009. A total of 17,124 filings were initiated year-to-date compared to 17,533 in 2009. The following graph compares Dane County and Wisconsin year-to-date foreclosure growth through the month of July. The growth rates reflect the percent change from the number of foreclosures registered year-to-date through July of 2009.
Recent History
From the graph below you’ll see Dane County foreclosure activity has steadily increased over the past 5 years. The 1,695 foreclosures in 2009 represent a 302% increase from the 422 foreclosures registered in 2004.
The following graph compares Dane County and Wisconsin foreclosure growth dating back to 2001. Dane County foreclosure growth has outpaced growth at the statewide level for 4 of the last 5 years.
